Research Opportunity

Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers Smokers Study Fact Sheet

WHAT:
A breakthrough early detection lung cancer screening conducted by Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers and the Baylor Sammons Lung Cancer Center.

The study will be conducted using the CellSearch System™, which can pinpoint a single cancerous cell in approximately every 40 billion blood cells. To put that into perspective, a tumor the size of a grain of rice has about a million cells.

The goal of the study is to prove that CellSearch, currently approved for use in monitoring metastatic breast cancer, is much more effective in diagnosing early-stage lung cancer than the X-ray, currently the most common screening process.

The study will target 150 symptom-free smokers aged 50 to 74 with at least a 40 pack-per-year or more history. Participants must be current smokers or have quit within the last 10 years.

WHO:
Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers, whose goal is to expand treatment options for all cancer patients through investigational gene and cellular therapies.  Mary Crowley conducts early-phase trials aimed at identifying new cancer-specific therapies and has full-service outpatient oncology clinics devoted to patient comfort and overall well-being.

WHEN:
The study will last until 150 participants have been identified and screened, with physicians and staff at Mary Crowley available to guide them through every step of the process.

HOW:
By calling the Baylor Sammons Lung Cancer Center at 214-820-6767 to sign up for the study.

About Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers
Mary C. Crowley, founder of the Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers, spent 27 years in remission from her cancer before she was struck for a second time by the disease in 1985. Upon learning that treatment options had not accelerated since her first bout with cancer in 1958, Crowley charted a path to create treatment alternatives. The result was the Mary Crowley Cancer Research Centers, established to expand treatment options for all cancer patients through investigational gene and cellular therapies. Mary Crowley offers a full-service outpatient oncology clinic devoted to patient comfort and overall well-being, and also conducts early-phase trials aimed at identifying new cancer-specific therapies. Affiliate clinics are located in Albany, NY (Scotland); Albany, NY (Manning); Billings, MT; Dallas, (at Presbyterian Hospital); Dayton; Greenville, SC; Norfolk, VA; and Tyler, TX. For more information, visit www.MaryCrowley.org.

On-Line MRC Education

MRC Leaders and Volunteers,

The National Nurse Emergency Preparedness Initiative (NNEPI) recently launched Nurses on the Front Line: Preparing for and Responding to Emergencies and Disasters, which provides online training and resources for nurses. This initiative, funded by the Department of Homeland Security and supported by George Washington University, serves as a terrific resource for those seeking free online training that also includes the option for up to 6 CEUs for a small fee.

This learning tool may also provide some insight for professions other than nursing, as well. We encourage Medical Reserve Corps unit leaders and volunteers to take advantage of this course and all the resources available on the site.
